Sometimes you just have to get out of your comfort zone and be silly and enjoy the little things in life. I have a friend visiting from out of the country and we were picking apples from the tree in my backyard. He noticed the grapefruit tree and wondered about those fruits. I shared that they were pretty sour and had a lot of white pith. Basically I considered them inedible.
Of course, if you knew him, he considered this a challenge. So he made me a bet that he could get my neighbors to enjoy them. I agreed to the bet despite the fact that there was no wager. He told me that he was going to put them out front of the house with a sign letting people know they could take them. This made me laugh.
So together we proceeded to pick 9 or 10 of the largest grapefruits off the tree, laughing as we did this. Arms full we headed through the gate to the front of the house. He then stacked them in a pyramid type shape on the front lawn near the curb. Knowing that this stack was near the fire hydrant, I laughed as I thought that no one in their right mind would take fruit off a pile on someone’s front lawn.
Laughing, he ran inside and got markers and a piece of cardboard. He then made a sign up that said: “Organic home grown free grapefruit.” Asking me for one of my wooden skewers, he made the sign so that it would be standing upright on the lawn by the grapefruits. Now, I did not take a photo because I was convinced no one would take some.
A few hours later I drove off to the store and noticed a few were gone. About an hour later I got a text from my friend asking me if I removed the grapefruits just to make him feel good. I laughed and told him no, because then I would loose the bet.
Later that evening we went out to see what was left. One lonely grapefruit and a cardboard sign were left. Now, I have no idea what my neighbors thought about the grapefruits or whether or not they enjoyed them. What I do know is that it was silly fun thing that we did together. It was a nice break in a very busy day. Will I eat a grapefruit, most likely not.
